COUNCIL INFORMATION

The first official meeting of the incorporated Malpeque Bay Community was held at Malpeque Hall on July 4, 1973. The community encompassed seven school districts: Baltic, Darnley, Hamilton, Malpeque, Indian River, Sea View, and Spring Valley.

Initially, the Council focused on managing a community dump, setting tax rates, and providing services like fire protection, garbage disposal, and addressing unsightly premises. Today, the Council continues to provide fire protection and animal control, supports local women's institutes for sign maintenance, offers small bursaries to Kensington Intermediate Senior High School graduates, and lays a wreath annually at the Malpeque cenotaph. A Wellness/Recreation Grant assists communities within the municipality.

The Council sponsors local events such as Relay for Life, Princetown United Church Fish Fry, Keir Memorial Museum's "The Talks," Canada Day celebrations, an annual Halloween party, and a summer art program for children (launched in July 2024). A newsletter runs in the County Line Courier as needed.

Environmental initiatives include wildlife habitat improvements, stream and river enhancement programs, and a tree row planting project — the first of its kind on P.E.I. — for erosion control.

Building permits are issued through the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs, while land subdivision permits go through the Council for review and comments. Many councillors serve on various local committees, volunteering their time.

Many of our councillors sit on various other committees within the area. All councillors volunteer their time and talents. The Rural Municipality of Malpeque Bay office is run from the Administrator’s home. Summer and Fall meetings are held at one of the community halls on a rotational basis. Winter meetings are held in the Kensington Town Council Chambers. Meetings are open to the public unless advertised. Residents are encouraged to contact the Mayor or other members of the Council anytime if they have a question or concern.
